Salary: $15.00-18.00 per hour – 40 hours per week – Monday-Friday
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Highway Technician 1 is responsible for performing a variety of roadway maintenance tasks to ensure safe and efficient transportation for the public. This position involves manual labor, operating equipment, and assisting in roadway repairs, debris removal, and general highway maintenance under the guidelines of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of roadways, bridges, signs, guardrails, and drainage systems.
  • Operate and maintain light and heavy equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, mowers, and power tools.
  • Assist in roadway repair activities such as patching potholes, sealing cracks, and removing debris.
  • Perform vegetation control, including mowing, trimming, and applying herbicides as needed.
  • Set up and remove traffic control devices, including signs, barricades, and cones, to ensure safety in work zones.
  • Assist in emergency response situations, including hurricane preparedness, flooding, and accident clean-up.
  • Conduct routine inspections of highways and report any safety hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with FDOT safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Previous experience in roadway maintenance, construction, or a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of FDOT safety regulations and roadway maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), work in extreme weather conditions, and perform physical labor.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and emergency response situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience operating heavy machinery and power tools.
  • FDOT Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification or ability to obtain.
  • Knowledge of basic road construction and repair techniques.
